A FORMER Royal Marine pressured to give up after the sound of gunfire ruined his hearing has gained more than £700,000 compensation.

James Barry, 34, enlisted as a Commando in 2013 and hoped to ultimately be a part of the Special Boat Service.

However he was medically discharged in 2017 after suffering listening to loss.

Mr Barry stated he was issued with over-ear defenders for use on reside hearth workouts but they have been impractical.

And various foam ear inserts he was issued failed to dam noise effectively and sometimes fell out.

Mr Barry, now a lorry driver, sued the Ministry of Defence over the loss of his army profession and the onset of listening to loss and continual tinnitus.

The MoD accepted main legal responsibility, however claimed Mr Barry, of Nottingham, was partly responsible by not using the offered ear safety.

However at London’s High Courtroom yesterday, Mr Justice Johnson threw out that argument, calling the defenders “inadequate and incompatible with different gear”.

He awarded £713,716 in damages for ache, suffering and loss of amenity.
